SOUTH Tyneside’s Little Mix music stars need the votes from their home town once again – to help them scoop a national award.
The band, which stars South Shields singers Jade Thirlwall and Perrie Edwards, have been nominated for Glamour magazine’s Women Of The Year Awards.
The X Factor winners, who made history in December by becoming the first group to win the ITV1 talent show, are battling it out in the band section of the awards.
They are competing against chart toppers The Saturdays, rockers Florence and the Machine and pop group Parade.
Perrie’s mum, Debbie Dufty, of Whiteleas, says the girls, who have just been on holiday in the Bahamas ahead of the X Factor Tour which starts later this month, are thrilled they have been short-listed.
She said: “I don’t think they can get their heads round the fact that they have been nominated, to be honest.
“They have all just been plodding along, doing their own thing, and opportunities like this keep coming their way – it’s amazing, really.
“Perrie said to me the other day ‘Mam, it’s such a great honour we have been nominated, isn’t it? – out of all the bands out there they could choose from’.
Mrs Dufty said: “And it really is – they’re getting nominated alongside some of the UK’s top girlbands.
“I just wish they would realise how well they are doing. I think once the tour starts, the reality will start to sink in.” The awards, which are run by the women’s fashion magazine, aim to highlight the achievements of females in the music, fashion and entertainment industry.
To vote for the band, which also stars Jesy Nelson and Leigh Anne Pinnock, people have to log on to the magazine’s website.
A short form pops up, and every entry has the chance of winning a pair of tickets to the star-studded awards ceremony on May 29.
Debbie added: “It’s free to vote, and only takes a few moments, so I hope people will once again get behind Little Mix and show them their support. I know the girls will all really appreciate it.”
